photoDial-A-Mum is a 7 days a week, 8am until 11pm, telephone support service run by trained volunteers who are all mothers. This service is now in its thirtieth year of operation. We are there to listen, and offer confidentiality, anonymity, understanding and respect, reassurance and empathy. We find that because of our name, the assumption by the community is that our service is for children only. This assumption, however, is incorrect as our callers range from school aged children to grandparents. Dial-A-Mum is for anyone in the community who needs to talk about an issue that is troubling them. Callers phone a central number (02 9477 6777) and calls are forwarded to the mothers at home on duty. Our website is: www.dial-a-mum.org.au

Please note there have been changes to the National Due & overdue rules for Childhood Immunisation. Contact your local Medicare office for more details.

Medicare Healthy Kids Check The aim of the Healthy Kids Check is to ensure every four year old child in Australia has a basic health check to see if they are healthy, fit and ready to learn when they start school. The Healthy Kids Check will promote early detection of lifestyle risk factors, delayed development and illness, and introduce guidance for healthy lifestyles and early intervention strategies. The Healthy Kids Check will take place at or around the same time as the four year old immunization. Contact your local GP for more info.

Clothing Exchange

Fashionistas, vintage connoisseurs and op-shoppers will gather at Ku-ring-gai Town Hall on Saturday 21 August to update their wardrobes without spending a cent.

Council is hosting a clothing exchange for the whole family, where people will swap clothes they value but no longer wear for those they will.

It’s not just your wallet that will thank you; the environment will too. Exchanging clothes is more sustainable than purchasing new clothes, which requires cleared land, labour, water, dyes and transport. And your old items won’t simply go into landfill.

Any leftover clothing will be donated to ClothesLine, which provides good quality clothing and other essential items, free of charge, to the homeless and disadvantaged.

Bring up to six items. Clothing must be in good condition and is subject to screening. No undergarments accepted.

Event Details

Where: Ku-ring-gai Town Hall, 1181 Pacific Highway, Pymble

Date: Saturday 21 August

Time: Check in at 1pm. The exchange operates from 1.30pm - 3pm

For more information: Email Council at clothingexchange@kmc.nsw.gov.au

Register now by filling out the form below by Wednesday 18 August. Happy shopping!

FAQs

Can I bring shoes to the exchange?

Yes, you are more than welcome to bring shoes as part of your six items.

What happens with my clothes if I don’t find anything I want to exchange?

One of our friendly staff members will try and help you search for items you may wish to exchange. In the event that you find nothing suitable, you will be given a pass to participate in another exchange. Clothing exchanges are held regularly all over Sydney.

KIDS FIRST DAY HOME, ON THE BUS! A new year means new exciting challenges & change. Beginning of school term my 8yr old as asked if she could start catching the bus home from school with her older sister (10yrs); "But you are both still very young and I am not sure if it is safe, you have to stop at Hornsby Station get off your bus & wait another 2minutes or so to board the Hornsby Heights bus, I just don’t know if you are ready" I tried to get my point across but it was me who was not ready to let go, I love picking my kids up every day from school, it’s the highlight of my day, I love to see their gleaming faces as they tell me about their active school day, I hear all their stories on the way home, I cherish this time with them. "Oh Please, Mum" replies Natasha in a cheeky tone: "We know what to do & how to be safe, besides our friends will be with us, come on Muúm" her tone becoming a nag. I give in & before I know it I am filling out the bus pass form in the School Office. Today is the day I will not be collecting my gorgeous girls from school, they will be making their own way home via 2 buses – Miss Independents. Well it’s 3pm and my stomach is in knots, I feel sick with worry & unneeded, a mix of emotions rushes through me – I am not quite sure how I should feel! I imagine them boarding their bus, outside school. Guess what, I am not at home waiting for them, oh no, I am across the road from the station spying on them – just to make sure all goes well – yeah right! I wait & wait & eventually their bus arrives at the station, I see them getting off & heading towards their 2nd bus, I want to run towards them with open arms & yell "mummy’s here, come I’ll take you home" but I don’t I stand quietly and my eyes filled with tears – I ‘d better get home before they do. Well they arrive home, feeling very proud of themselves; they loved their first true taste of freedom & independence. The next day goes better I stay at home, & actually feel ok, I have an hour extra in my day & I don’t have to worry about the afternoon school traffic "have to look on the bright side – life does go on"

 photoMessage from a Working Mum.
11 years ago …… When I was pregnant I had it all worked out (or so I thought) the baby would work around my schedule, I would be super organised, work from home and successfully juggle all my Mummy, home & work responsibilities. "Piece Of Cake"…...…..NOT! Baby arrives and all plans fall apart, 22months later baby number 2 arrives and life is not working out the way I planned, but hey I have two beautiful, gorgeous girls & a wonderful husband. Who cares about the peanut butter stuck in my hair & the permanent zombie feeling I have, from all the sleep deprivation. My motto is to "have fun & enjoy each stage" Evan though some are a bit of a blur. Anyway Eventually I got my act together and started my career/work from home duties with a 9mnth old & 2½ yr old – well there was never a dull moment like, the baby sitter cancelling at the last minute when I had an important work meeting to attend; getting dressed & ready for work only to have a toddler vomit all over my new work suit; I was guaranteed of a really stinky nappy situation when taking the kids with me to work & meetings; & when my 3 yr had chicken pox she was not allowed back at preschool for at least 3 weeks, and did I mention that children don’t like it when you ignore them and make a work related telephone call , my daughter pulled the phone line out many a time. Just as I got my head around being a mum & juggling all my duties they start school – "yey now I have 5 days school hours that I can dedicate to my work & from 3pm – 8pm I will dedicate to my kids". But…but, but there is SCHOOL that needs you! & homework that can not be done independently; school projects which you need to shop for, Lots of sick days off school, pupil free days, lots of notes & school things to keep on top of & so much more than I ever imagined. I guess what I am trying to say is that life as a parent is so unpredictable & does not always work out the way you plan. I have realised that I don’t always have the power & sometimes just sometimes I have to surrender for a moment because my first & most important job is being a MUM.

My advice to working mums:
  • Delegate home chores to the children (my children have been unpacking the dish washer every morning since they were 3, I don’t mind chipped crockery")
  • Plan your meals & always write a shopping list  (I know this sound simple but it really works ~ it’s up to you to stick to it)
  • buying groceries online & having them delivered is a fantastic time saver & you don’t buy unnecessary items
  • Tell your children about your work & responsibilities you will be surprised at how helpful they can be if they know you have had a bad work day (ps: this only applies to children 7yrs+)
  • Be realistic when setting your personal goals & targets
  • Don’t over commit (learn to say no! ~ in a nice way of course)
  • Take some time out for your self – re charge your batteries
Always remember your family happiness & well being is most important

photoKids & Chemicals Don’t Mix – Make the Switch, Go ORGANIC!

Did you know that exposure to chemicals through what you put in your kids mouth or on their body can weaken their immune system and impair their physical and mental development?

The products in your home are much more dangerous than you think. In fact, chemicals linked to cancer, behavioural problems and birth defects may be lurking inside common brands of shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and everyday products.

Conservative estimates show we put three personal care products on infants and children every day. Some products, like soap, are used several times a day. How many avoidable toxic ingredients are we unknowingly exposing our children to every day?

Do a checklist of your personal care products and reduce them where you can. Beware of children’s make-up kits, nail polish and hair care products which may contain chemicals that are highly toxic to them. Keep it simple and throw out 1-2 toxic products a week to start with. Begin with the toothpaste and mouthwash. Gradually replace every single personal care item including sunscreen, makeup, hair care and body care with non toxic alternatives. The Chemical Maze Pocketbook may become your best friend on this journey. Its full of information about the potential health effects of food additives and ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care products.

Another great resource is www.cosmeticdatabase.com. Once you start using organic, natural, non toxic products you can’t go back to using the stuff you used to use. There is such a big gap between toxic and non toxic products in terms of quality, feel, smell and peace of mind. Organic and natural products work better!
